This is finally it! OH MY GOD! It’s finally Halloween. This will be the first year that I don’t have to watch over my delinquent little sister and make sure she doesn’t do anything stupid. This year my dad is going to stay at home and watch over her. But still that isn’t my only exciting thing of the day. I got invited to a high end Halloween party at my internship in Interview Magazine in what better place than? New York City!

Living in Connecticut can be slow…very slow. Nothing much happens here. It’s always the same old people doing the same old thing. This is very unlike the Big Apple where people are always in a hurry doing fun and exciting things; in the mist of all this craziness there are people trying to create their master pieces be it a piece of clothing, some art sculpture or even vandalism on a street corner. This is New York and you can do anything you put your mind to here.

I take a one hour train ride to New York City everyday to do my internship at Interview Magazine. And let me just say I love it, it is amazing Even though I have a lot of work to do, it is truly worth it because I get to deal with the latest fashion clothes and the newest makeup trends. I particularly enjoy critiquing the newest fashion clothing that has just arrived into our office. But tonight I get to be the girl that everyone will critic. Everyone at the party will think that I live in New York. I will be like everyone there. Tonight I will escape from being a high school girl living in the deathly boring suburbs to a fierce and exciting girl. Tonight I will be the girl on fire.

6:30 pm

We (my friend and I) are sitting in a jam back subway car, we are only 10 minutes into the ride, 50 more minutes till I have the best time of my life I say to myself out loud. Which gets Walt my friend to look up at me wondering if I have gone crazy talking to myself. I tell him to “shut up”.

I just can’t help it this may one of the best parties that we will ever go in either of our lives. Imagine all the fun people we will meet, they will be oh so talented! The most creative bunch of New Yorkers. Walt knew this and this is why he ditched his girlfriend Maggie back in Connecticut. And Walt was perfect he is like one of my girlfriends in a guy form, I love him and I would do anything for him and Maggie. And plus I needed a guy to compete my outfit. We were the royal couple I was dressed as Princess Diana in a big white ball grown wedding dress and he was Prince Charles in a high attire uniform.

7:30 pm

We finally arrive at the party. I didn’t recognize anyone from my internship mostly because their faces are covered with masks or paint. It was weird because I didn’t even see my boss, Laura. I look over to Walt he looked as uncomfortable as I was, and I knew why it was because we were dressed too formally. We had too many clothes on. Here the people were in their lingerie dancing to the cheap and shabby music with glow sticks around their necks in the dark.

9:44 pm

Walt and I finally found someone to talk to, his name was Brethren and his dream was to make it big on Broadway. He talked about the plays he did and some of the new things he was trying; like writing his own plays. He was hot and oh so lovely. His simile the way he opened his mouth and talked how he would so formally have his hands in his pockets. From behind me I heard my boss Laura call my name. I turned to see her dressed in a huge purple and green peacock feathered dress, she even added feathers to her eyelashes, very cool I thought. But there was something about her. She wasn’t herself. She said “ watch what I can do” and jumped off the table landing flat on the ground. She was high, taken way too many drugs couldn’t control herself. As she came up to me I tried introducing her to Walt, in return she gave us two white pills. Walt and I looked at each other, we knew what they were. It was an ecstasy pill she wanted her to take and she demanded if we wanted to have fun at her party we will take it right now.

I pretended to take the little white pill, but instead threw it out from the side of my mouth. However I think Walt took it. He was like “I feel fine. You should have taken it too Carrie”. Damn I can’t believe I didn’t take it I thought to myself. Now Walt is going to have all the fun and I’m going to be stuck here being normal and not high.

10:25 pm

I found my new friend Brethren again. He was telling my about how vandalism is made. He described in great detail how the artist at the party was using spray paint as his to create his message, he also was telling me the history of graffiti came into play and how old it was. But honestly I wasn’t paying attention. I couldn’t stop thinking about how hot he was. I heard Walt who was feeling the effects of the ecstasy pill say “oh my god it’s fucking beautiful”. Brethren who heard this said “there isn’t anything better than being high and watching art being created, it’s purely amazing”.

Brethren then asked me to tell him about my life, this question upset me because I didn’t have anything interesting to say like Brethren. My life was super boring; I was a teenager still in high school who still lived with her parents. My life was boring. Interrupting my thoughts was the sound of my boss Laura calling my name, she said “Carrie I need you, I need someone who is warm and yummy”.

She was still high. Why was everyone at this party high but me? I asked her what she wanted and told her “I was busy”. I wanted to talk to Brethren , not her I see her all the time at work. A little annoyed I asked her how many pills she took.

She told my she took “four ecstasy pills and same champagne, but I think I might have put a little piece a paper in my mouth. Oh what was it? Ah! Acid paper.”

“Acid paper” I also yelled out. My yelling didn’t affect her she was in another world her own world. She ran to the corner of the room where there was a window. And said “I’m a bird I can fly”. I grabbed her and pulled her back to the expensive and plush sofa. I had to take care of her. What if she did something stupid? If I didn’t help her who would? I looked around, almost everyone here was drugged or too busy to care about someone else here. What if she tried jumping again? I needed to take her back to her room. She would be safe there.

11:10 pm

I finally finished putting Laura in her bed. I made sure she didn’t move from there by telling her this is her island and as a bird she must not leave it. She wasn’t falling asleep so I decided to tell a little bed time story. It was about how I felt like I was a little piece of a big continent back home. I wasn’t allowed to do what I ever I wanted back home, I was always busy trying to take care of someone else. Laura then mumbles “here in NYC we are all jam packed together millions of us, yet we remain our own island because we are so freaking diverse. It’s hard being an island here. Here every day in order to keep up with the other islands we have to also watch what the other island is doing whether that island is wearing high couture, then you must start wearing the same thing because you don’t want to get behind”

I didn’t agree with her. She was saying that everything I loved about this island made her miserable. As she fell asleep I decided to find Brethren.

I found Brethren but he was too busy making out with this another girl. He caught me staring at him, and ran towards me. He told me “It’s not what you think Carrie. She jumped on me!”

“Sure” I said and walked away. I should have known guys like him do things like that.

I was miserable I came to New York to have to escape from this world of mine where I had responsibilities and take of other people. I just wanted to be free. But I think I’m better at being a good friend. I saw Walt on a sofa alone. He looked upset I could see it in his face, he wanted to go home. It had been a rough night; the city has shown me its dark side. I just wanted to go home to where I belong. But I made it through and realized who I wanted to be. A good friend.
